Questions.
About Kinema, measuring movement on video, and the pre-order.
Everything people ask
Which Macs does Kinema run on?
Any Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 14 Sonoma or newer.
Which videos can I open?
Anything your Mac plays: iPhone and Android video, GoPro and most camera files, including slow motion up to 240 fps. Slow-motion clips shared from a phone often arrive as 30 fps files; Kinema lets you say the rate they were filmed at, so times stay real.
Can I use it with patients and clients?
Yes. Everything stays on your Mac: there is no account, no cloud upload and no analytics. Video is stored in a library folder you control.
Does Kinovea run on a Mac?
No. Kinovea is Windows-only, and its own site says it does not run on Apple silicon Macs, even in Parallels. Kinema is a separate app built natively for the Mac with the same kind of tools: frame stepping, angles, lines, comparison and export.
How do I measure a knee angle from video?
Film from the side with the camera level and still. In Kinema, step to the frame you want, press A and click the hip, the knee and the ankle. Kinema shows the interior knee angle to one decimal place, pinned to that frame.
How accurate are the angles?
Angles are computed from the points you place, in the video’s real pixel proportions, and shown to 0.1°. Accuracy then depends on filming: camera level, perpendicular to the movement, and still.
Can I measure distances?
Yes, after calibrating the clip once: click both ends of something you know the length of and type its length in cm or inches. Every distance on that clip then uses it.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay once: $69 for a founding licence now, $129 at launch. It includes version 1.0 and every 1.x update, on 2 Macs.
When does it ship?
Beta for pre-order customers from December 2026; Kinema 1.0 by 31 January 2027.
What if it is late?
If 1.0 is not out by 31 January 2027, every pre-order is refunded in full automatically. You can also ask for a refund at any time before launch.
Does Kinovea work on M1, M2, M3 or M4 Macs?
No. Kinovea is a Windows program, and its site says it does not run on Apple silicon Macs, even in a Windows virtual machine such as Parallels.
Is Kinema a port of Kinovea?
No. Kinema is a separate app written from scratch for macOS. It shares the kind of tools, not code.
Is Kinema free like Kinovea?
No. Kinema is a one-time purchase: $69 as a founding pre-order, $129 at launch. No subscription.
Is Kinema a medical device?
No. Kinema is a measurement and documentation tool for clinicians. It does not diagnose or recommend treatment.
Where is patient video stored?
In a Kinema library folder on your Mac, or a disk you choose. Nothing is uploaded.
Can I measure range of motion?
Yes. Place three points on the joint at the frame of interest; Kinema shows the angle to 0.1°. Film perpendicular to the movement for the best accuracy.
What frame rate should I film running at?
120 or 240 fps slow motion on a phone is ideal: foot strike lasts only a few hundredths of a second.
Can I use treadmill and track video?
Yes. Any video your Mac plays. Keep the camera still and level, side-on for knee and hip, behind for pelvis and knee tracking.
Does it track joints automatically?
Not in 1.0: you place the points, which keeps you in control of accuracy. Automatic joint tracking is planned as a free update for founding licences.
Which angles can I measure for a bike fit?
Any three-point joint angle (knee, hip, ankle, elbow), angles to vertical or horizontal (back, forearm), and calibrated distances.
Do I need markers on the rider?
No. You click the joints on the frame. Small stickers on the joints make placing points quicker and more repeatable.
Does it work on a MacBook in the studio?
Yes. It runs on any Apple silicon Mac and needs no internet connection.
Is Kinema like Coach’s Eye?
It covers the same core jobs (slow motion, drawing, comparison) as a Mac app with measured angles and reports. It does not record video; you film on your phone or camera.
Which sports does it suit?
Any movement you can film from one side or behind: running, cycling, jumping, lifting, swimming starts, throws and strokes.
Can I show the video to an athlete on a TV?
Yes. Present mode fills the screen with the video and transport controls only.
See movement clearly.
